Moonstone gets its name from its appearance. When the cabochon is cut correctly, it is said you can see the stages of the moon in its shimmer. Gemologists call this affect adularescence, which originates from the interior structure of the gemstone in scales or lamellas. This stunning effect makes moonstone unique and a desired gem for all. Moonstone comes from the mineral family of feldspars. Most colored moonstones come from India, while the finest gems are found in Sri Lanka.
Fine moonstone has become more rare over the years, and it is hard to find them now. There is a rainbow variety of moonstone, which is milky white in color and has a rainbow sheen. This variety comes from India and Madagascar. To give off the best effects of this gem, it is generally cut in high domed oval cabochons, sometimes even with a carving of the ‘man in the moon.’
Moonstone is the state stone of Florida, getting this honor in 1970 after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s historical landing on the moon. Moonstone has many spiritual and mystical stories and beliefs from all over the world.
