How to View the Star in a Star Sapphire:
Star sapphires display a unique optical effect called asterism, where a star-shaped pattern appears to float across the surface of the gemstone. This effect is caused by light reflecting off tiny needle-like inclusions within the stone.
To best view the star:
-
Use a direct, single light source. A flashlight, phone light, or a beam of sunlight works best. Avoid diffused or ambient lighting, as it may obscure the star.
-
Hold the stone at an angle. Gently tilt or move the gem while keeping the light focused on it. The star will appear to move across the surface as the angle changes.
-
Place it against a dark background if possible to increase contrast and visibility of the star.
Please note:
The star may not be visible under certain indoor lighting conditions (like soft overhead lights), which is completely normal. A properly lit environment is key to fully appreciating the beauty of a star sapphire.
